Does a sustainable packaging exist for the fine fragrance industry? (part 3)

In this last part of the article (read part 1 and part 2) I give you three more examples in which you see identical applications of DuPont’s Surlyn, all in combination with fine glass. These three examples combine refinement with simplicity and have a reasonable degree of sustainability.

Mexx Black
For the first time displayed at the Cosmopack 2009 in Bologna by the German manufacturer Gerresheimer AG/Düsseldorf, the flacons for Mexx Black Man and Mexx Black Woman (P&G Prestige Beauté) develop a strong allure, with their consistent rectangular shapes and black, but with the addition of the light transparency of glass with a whisper of the tinted fragrance.
This work of art succeeds with the help of a vertical transition as the deep black merges into colourlessness. From the T-shaped closure to well beyond the angular shoulder the flacons are enveloped in black high gloss, which half way down the opaque darkness gradually breaks up, evaporates in a shroud of mist and then vanishes almost completely.

A sight in itself, the so-called degradée spraying on the immaculately smooth body provides the framework for further very beautiful effects. Its transparency in the lower area allows the delicately tinted fragrance to be seen – here the feminine variant shimmers in a fine salmon hue and the masculine in cooler blue grey. In each case the same colour tone is reflected in the printed logo ‘Mexx Black’.

Mibelle’s SwissLady and SwissGirl
Also manufactured by Gerresheimer are the two perfumes ‘SwissLady’ and ‘SwissGirl‘ from the Swiss company Mibelle Cosmetics. With a wide base and pointed towards the top, the mountain silhouette is unmistakable. The two flacons – which are identical apart from the printed names – were rigorously reduced to its essentials and masterfully stylized on a rectangular base, appearing to be a minimalistic shape but actually very ingenious in terms of detail.

Viewed from the front it forms a wedge shape, wide at the bottom, narrow at the top. Only the extreme tip is capped, removing from the object an otherwise unavoidable optical sharpness. While the two sides incline towards each other as completely flat surfaces, the front and back form a soft flowing system, in a synchronous flourish they fall away from the highest point, then arch inwards, to the meeting point on the ground. This carefully measured combination of hard and soft design elements gives the flacon a fine emotional aura.

The crystal-clear glass vessel and the equally clear plastic hood compliment each other seamlessly to create the unique character of this flacon. Even the fragrance inside appears pure like a babbling mountain stream. In silver screen printing with the shimmer of powdery snow they contribute perfectly to the mountaintop atmosphere.

Sole Mio for Yves de Sistelle
The flacon from SPPC Paris Bleu was one of the highlights of the latest collection on show at the Luxe Pack 2009 in Monaco. It seems to come from a far-off galaxy: the sun which rises for the brand Yves de Sistelle and its new fragrance ‘sole mio’ emerges glass-clear and majestic from a sea of lilac.
Rectangular flacons are familiar items, and round ones too. This one is both. What the glass artists at Gerresheimer have achieved in teamwork with plastic specialists is akin to squaring the circle. The fragrance-filled hollow celestial body complete with atomizer button is incorporated in a closed block. Viewed from the front or back – which are the same – a beautiful large circle is seen in the square. The real trick is, that the heavenly globe has another dimension of its own. Like a balloon it arches forward from the face sides of the shallower block.
A particularly striking effect is the combination of glass and crystal-clear plastic which makes up the top third.

Degradée spraying dips the flacon in total extravagance. First of all dark then lighter and lighter the lilac rises up from the base. But it does not evaporate completely. Over the logo printed in dark lilac a strong colour tone is maintained to the edge of the glass. A striking contrast to the seamlessly adjoining clear plastic. The picture of a sun which rises somewhere from the mysterious depths is perfect.

Up to you to decide whether the fine fragrance industry is cleaning up its image and still is able to come up with the newest, coolest, most desirable packaging ever.
