Basically dual or multiple chamber or compartment containers are designed to allow for the co-packaging of more than one product which brought together create one integrated final product. Often they are packed separately as the compositions cannot easily, stably, or cost-effectively be packaged in standard one compartment containers, which might cause a too early deterioration of the quality and usefulness of the final product. You see them seldom used in the food or beverage industry, as there the dispenser cap is more popular for distributing the sensitive vitamins and other ingredients. The dual chamber container is popular in the chemical industry, especially the dual-compartment adhesives, such as epoxies. Other examples you can find in the field of oral care, a mouthwash product and a toothpaste product marketed by Unilever under the trade name “Mentadent”, and in the field of drain cleaners, a product called “Liquid Plumr” marketed by Clorox.
Although cleverly designed, there are severe limitations in that supermarket shelves typically carry a large variety of products and the consumer is both confused by the number of products and likely to overlook such a product packed in a dual-chamber bottle. Indeed despite the use of the word “Duo”, “Dual”, Twin” or whatever in the name there is ironically no other way of recognizing the nature of the product packed in a multiple chamber bottle when it is seen on a supermarket shelf. Remember the consumer only spends 4 seconds to screen the shelves. You can’t expect a consumer to shop with an open eye for the exceptional design and used technology of the packaging. Therefore it’s very difficult to show the consumer the benefits of a dual-chamber bottle.
Let’s have a look at some typical dual chamber bottles launched over the last few years. We start with the beverage industry, followed by cosmetic and chemical products. My first example is a dual-chamber bottle alright but it only holds one product: Hype. Originally, launched into the UK in 1995, Hype Energy Drinks are full of vitamins, ginseng, guarana and natural fruit juices which results in an energy drink. The drink comes in beverage cans, but HYPE Energy also manufactures a shot glass, which has two compartments. HYPE Energy sits in the bottom compartment and the consumer has to pour an alcohol of his choice, vodka or a similar shot into the top compartment. The basic concept of the Hype Shot Glass is to receive a precise energy boost that takes effect in a very short space of time. The alcohol in the top compartment and does not mix with the Hype in the bottom compartment, only when you start drinking the Hype mixes with the alcohol entering your mouth.
One of the popular combinations is Hype in the bottom portion and the classic Jägermeister in the top. They call it a hymeister.
Zhen Bao Fang Liqueur
I am always marvelling at the creativity and simplicity in Chinese packaging design. This is such a beauty. Chinese liqueur is usually made from blending several liqueurs of different alcohol percentages.
This package from Zhen Bao Fang combines a bigger bottle with 46% alcohol liqueur and a small bottle with 68% alcohol liqueur. Customers can drink from the two bottles of liqueur separately or experience blending them to make a liqueur with a new alcohol percentage.
Both bottles are moulded in the same style, one perfectly fitting, upside down, as closure for the larger bottle. Together they show as one, in line they are “big brother, little brother.”
Two-in-One bottle for olive oil and vinegar
Italian food manufacturer Corex Spa comes with two interlinked 150 ml bottles, or actually you should say two half-bottles. One containing extra virgin olive oil, and the other containing balsamic vinegar of Modena. Both half-cylindrical bottles are linked to each other and topped with a dispenser cap with a rotating and adjustable outlet, allowing the consumer to precisely measure and mix these two ingredients in order to make a made-to-measure dressing for his salads.
The dispenser cap is adjustable from 100% of vinegar to 100% of oil, through all intermediates.
Double Down Spot Remover
An identical one is the dual-bottle for Double Down spot remover, a product of Hillyard, Inc., made from two ingredients that cannot be mixed until they are applied to a garment or carpet.
TricorBraun developed a packaging that evenly mixes both ingredients in mid-air before they are applied. The dual-bottle Packaging includes a patented dual dispensing closure with
directional feature on top of the two interlocking bottles.
A single, custom-designed, snapfinish closure is attached to the two interlocking containers and consistently mixes the stream of chemicals one inch after they leave the cap and before the mix reaches the soiled area.
Hillyard Double Down ActionTwo ergonomically shaped, 16-oz (474 ml), high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers are permanently joined by a locking mechanism that is moulded to the sides of the containers.
Dual Concept Bottles
New High Glass has introduced a dual concept bottle designed for use in the personal care and cosmetics market allowing two products to be applied simultaneously. The Dual Concept Bottles feature two chambers for two products in one convenient bottle. Each chamber features its own dispenser, which provides equal and simultaneous dispensing of the two products with each stroke, suitable for products that need to remain separate but require proportionate mixing upon application.
The dispenser also allows each chamber to be dispensed separately, for phased application. The bottles come in both 30- and 50-ml sizes, with the chambers containing half the volume of each. According to the company, the 30 ml is suited for cosmetics, prestige treatments or skin care products while the 50 ml is suited for a variety of personal care or cosmeceutical products.
Made of polypropylene, the two chambers of the dual concept bottles feature its own dispenser, which can be one of two types, provided by the Florida-based company as an integrated part of the solution.
The NDM dispenser provides equal and simultaneous dispensing of the two products with each stroke, making it easier for products that need to remain separate but that require proportionate mixing upon application. On the other hand, the NDD dispenser allows each chamber to be dispensed separately, for phased application, or together if the end user should prefer it.
Mentadent Dual Action Mouthwash Bottle
Unilever’s Chesebrough-Pons extended the dual-chambered dentifrice concept into the mouthwash category. Like the dentifrice, it also comes in a two-chamber container that keeps the baking soda separated from the peroxide. The two chemicals react when they come in contact with one another. The reaction is helpful in the mouth, not in the package.
In a design patented by Chesebrough and Joe Kornick of Kornick Lindsay, each ingredient is kept in a clear bottle of polyethylene terephthalate that sits side-by-side in a moulded base of polypropylene. The twin-orifice dispensing snap cap is also moulded of PP. This flow controlled dispensing system accurately meters the components into the system’s cap.
